Public WiFi is everywhere — cafes, airports, hotels, and libraries. While convenient, these networks pose serious security threats that most people aren't aware of.
Danger #1: Man-in-the-Middle Attacks
Hackers can position themselves between you and the WiFi connection point. Instead of your data going directly to the router, it passes through the attacker, who can read everything — passwords, emails, credit card numbers.
Danger #2: Unencrypted Networks
Many public WiFi networks don't use encryption. This means data sent over these networks is transmitted in plain text, making it trivially easy for anyone with basic tools to intercept your information.
Danger #3: Malware Distribution
Attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in your device's software when connected to unsecured networks. They can inject malware into your device without you clicking on anything.
Danger #4: Rogue Hotspots
Cybercriminals can set up fake WiFi networks that look legitimate. "Coffee_Shop_Free_WiFi" might actually be a trap designed to capture your data.
Danger #5: Session Hijacking
Even after you log in to a secure website, attackers can steal your session cookies on public WiFi, gaining access to your accounts without needing your password.
How to Stay Safe
1. Always use a VPN — This encrypts all your traffic, making it unreadable to attackers 2. Verify network names — Ask staff for the exact WiFi name before connecting 3. Use HTTPS websites — Look for the padlock icon in your browser 4. Disable auto-connect — Prevent your device from automatically joining networks 5. Enable your firewall — This adds an extra layer of protection
